Wired bashes Chevrolet Volt bashers

From Wired Autopia's Chuck Squatriglia: Listen up all you GM haters and Volt bashers: The Chevrolet Volt rocks and General Motors deserves tremendous credit for building it. We cannot say this emphatically enough. The Volt effectively bridges internal combustion and battery-electric propulsion to provide many of the best attributes of each.

Spare us your lame arguments about "Government Motors" forcing this car on us. The Volt was in development long before the Bush administration bailed out the auto industry. Quit rehashing the tired "GM lied" debate over whether the Volt is an electric or a plug-in hybrid.

The bottom line is you'll do much, if not all, of your daily driving without burning gasoline. Stop griping about the $41,000 (pre-federal tax credit) price, already. Yes, it's expensive. We're talking about first-generation technology here, folks. Could you afford a 53-inch flat-screen TV when they first came out? No, you could not. Be patient.

One more thing. Don't give us that line about government subsidies for electrics unless you're equally outraged by the many billions in subsidies, tax breaks and other handouts the petroleum industry gets each year. You can't have it both ways.

What stuns us most about the vitriol is the people who say the Volt sucks or it is a failure without having actually driven it. We've driven the Volt at various stages of its development and come away impressed at every turn.

This is a remarkably well-engineered car with excellent fit-and-finish and a boatload of features. There's a reason the Volt is racking up car-of-the-year awards and it won the Green Car of the Year award. It sure as hell isn't because it sucks.

A remarkable year for electric vehicles in 2011

From John Gartner, on Huffington Post: The first Chevrolet Volts, Nissan Leafs, and Smart EDs were delivered in December, but in the annals of history, 2011 will be remembered as the year that electric vehicles (EVs) arrived. EVs for sale to consumers will dominate the headlines throughout the year as average Americans begin to recognize EVs as they roll down the road.

Because of the stalled start in the 1990s, when consumers were tempted by and then denied access to GM's EV1 and other EVs, every milestone during the year will be magnified in the media. By year's end nearly new 50,000 EVs will be plugging in at garages and lots across America. The arrival of new models from automakers Think, Coda, Mitsubishi, Mini, Toyota, and Chevrolet (a few of which were delayed from 2010) will give consumers more options.

Any missteps -- and there will be some -- will be cause célèbre for the EV doubters who don't believe in or desire a move away fossil fuels. Humans have always been fallible in designing and operating vehicles, and replacing liquid fuel with electrons won't change that. While considerable safeguards have been put in place to prevent accidents when charging a vehicle, somewhere someone will find a creative way for failure, and we can expect considerable fanfare by the naysayers when this inevitably occurs.

One of the important trends of 2011 we've identified at Pike Research will be the slow subsiding of the catch phrase "range anxiety." Range anxiety is the supposed fear that both prevents consumers from wanting to buy an EV with a 80-100 mile driving range or from driving said car very far for fear that the batteries will run out, leaving the driver stranded. Range anxiety has been overblown, underestimating drivers' ability to monitor their battery charge level through the various dashboard displays and auditory prompts.

Like the arrival of EVs, the rollout of charging infrastructure has been slower than expected off the line. However, installations of public charging infrastructure such as the government-subsidized EV Project and Charge Point America will see hundreds of charging stations installed across many of the nation's largest metropolitan areas. The availability of public charging equipment will actually outpace the need for vehicles to plug-in, which will result in many charge spots idled for most of the day, or even days at a time. While this will be the subject of derision as a waste of taxpayer money, if EVs instead outpaced charging infrastructure, it could result in a serious setback as the minority of drivers who plan to regularly charge their vehicles away from home might otherwise wait to make a purchase.

The electric vehicles' second act will be a top media story throughout the year, even at the box office with the mid-year release of Revenge of the Electric Car (watch the trailer). Many consumers will get their first direct exposure to EVs by renting a car from one of the many rental agencies that will make emissions-free driving a premium service. Fleets including delivery vehicles and taxis will be critical for collecting data about EV performance and to build confidence that this time around, EVs are here to stay.

New York City to ditch yellow cabs for greener taxis?

From the BBC: Nothing screams New York more loudly than the city's yellow cab, but city officials hope the next generation of taxis will be, well, a bit more green.

New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission chairman David Yassky, who is overseeing the search for a new design, says the city hopes to replace the current fleet standard, the gas-guzzling Ford Crown Victory.

"It's done great work," he says. "But it's time for a new car. The Ford Crown Victoria gets 12 miles to a gallon. It's not the most comfortable ride in the back, and while it's a design that everyone associates with the New York City cab, it's time to freshen it up."

The finalists in the competition to design the next generation of yellow cabs include car manufacturers Nissan, Ford and Karsan of Turkey. The results will be announced in mid-January.

'No choice'

The competing designs are all roomier and more fuel-efficient than the current yellow taxis, which number about 13,000, and they all bear more than a passing resemblance to the most modern black cabs in London.

City officials are thinking of giving one manufacturer the contract to build all of New York's cabs - a change from the current situation where 16 different models of taxi are made by nine different manufacturers, although the majority are Ford's Crown Victoria.

The competing designs - including this Nissan - are all roomier and more fuel efficient than current cabs The potential move to one manufacturer is not popular with veteran taxi driver John Caines, who is devoted to his Crown Victoria.

"It's as New York as Broadway, as Manhattan as Times Square," he says. "It's my office, my production facility, my way of earning income."

Every morning, he gets up, washes his cab, and heads out to see what the day brings. Mr Caines does not want to part company with his current vehicle, and dislikes the idea of one manufacturer making all of the city's taxis.

"What about choice?" he asks. "Where's my freedom to choose? And what if that one manufacturer can't get you the parts when you need them? It's risky."

He also worries about how much the new cab might cost.

Don’t mess with Facebook, Twitter, Blogs: Portuguese company Ensitel learns the hard way what the Streisand effect is

UPDATE: On December 31, 2010, Ensitel withdrew its legal action against the blogger

Portugal’s mobile phone store chain Ensitel, a branch of Avenir Telecom, put itself in the centre of a public relations nightmare of a storm after getting a court order to force a blogger (who happens to work for Portugal's leading web portal) to remove six posts originally published in 2009. The post series centered on the blogger’s frustration after Ensitel refused to refund her for a malfunctioning Nokia cell phone, acquired in Lisbon.

The blogger, Maria João Nogueira, offered her view on the bad costumer experience episode that ended up in court later that year. Ensitel won the case, but ended up losing far more than a client when two years later, on December 2010, requested a court order to force the blog posts removal on the grounds of defamation.

The blogger refused to delete the posts, and word of corporate censorship on the blogosphere quickly spread through fellow bloggers, Twitter and Facebook. On Twitter, the #ensitel hashtag hit number one among Portuguese-speaking users.

On Facebook, Ensitel’s page was flooded with critical observations from clients, who then joined by the thousands groups like I will never buy another product at Ensitel. The company kept on a suicidal track when it started deleting comments from its Facebook profile and allegedly threatening Facebook users with legal action.

The case then spread to the Portuguese press, with newspapers pointing Ensitel’s naivety about social networks and columnists baffled by the level of rage exhibited by the Portuguese consumers in a time of deep political disengagement (contrary to the Greeks, the Irish or even the Icelanders, the Portuguese haven’t really protested much against current austerity measures).

The Streisand effect

This telenovela, as Maria João Nogueira calls it, is yet another example of the so-called Streisend effect, an internet phenomenon in which an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of causing the information to be publicized more widely (see Wikipedia’s article on the Streisand effect).

The name was coined after American actress Barbra Streisand unsuccessfully attempted to remove an aerial photograph of her California mansion from an online gallery through legal action, causing millions of internet users to search and view that very same image.

In September 2009, Wikipedia lists, the Photoshop Disasters blog posted an advertisement from Polo Ralph Lauren that contained a heavily manipulated image of a female model. The post was subsequently reprinted by BoingBoing. Ralph Lauren issued DMCA takedown notices to BoingBoing's ISP and Blogspot, which hosts Photoshop Disasters, claiming their use of the image infringed copyright.

Blogspot complied, but BoingBoing's ISP consulted with BoingBoing and agreed the image was fair use. As a result, BoingBoing issued a mocking rebuttal, using the same image again and posting the takedown notice. The rebuttal was widely reported, including on frequently viewed websites such as The Huffington Post and ABC News.

Newer, cheaper Ampera (Volt) already under development

From AutoEvolution: Before the European / British brother of GM's Chevy Volt, the Opel / Vauxhall Ampera, has even been released, GM Europe announced it will be replaced by a family of three extended-range electric vehicles within five years, that could potentially be made at General Motors’ Ellesmere Port factory in the UK, said AutoCar in a report.

While the first generation Volt/Ampera will be built in Detroit until 2015, the second generation of the extended range electric vehicles, which are already under development, will probably be manufactured in Europe.

“At that point it will make business sense to ramp up volumes of the Volt and Ampera, and to have several production sites for the ‘EREV’ model family,” said GM Europe president Nick Reilly for Autocar. “We will need one of those factories to be in Europe, and I’m very keen for it to be Ellesmere Port.”

The GM Europe official mentioned that the 2015 Ampera range will include a compact-medium hatchback, a four-door replacement of the upcoming Ampera and a crossover SUV similar to the Chevrolet Volt MPV5 concept that was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show.

2011 New Maserati Grand Turismno S

The Maserati GranTurismo S, the sportiest version of Maserati’s coupé, was developed for those looking for a distinctive performance car. The new and powerful 4.7 litre V8 engine is capable of generating 323 kw (440bhp), bestowing the GranTurismo S with a distinctive personality, aggression and power; all the necessary traits to deliver a refined drive in complete safety.

The transaxle set up employed in the design of the engine and gearbox is a stunning example of Maserati technology. The suspension makes the most of this system thanks to new fixed-rate dampers that now offer 10% more damping. The compression and extension ratios have also been tweaked and the rear torsion bar stiffened. The brakes, developed in collaboration with Brembo, always give a prompt response thanks to their dual cast iron and aluminium discs.

The sporty feel of the GranTurismo S is accentuated by Pininfarina’s modern lines. The detailing on the car renders it unmistakable. Features include red prongs on the Trident, the Saetta logo mirror and the standard colour of the brake callipers, features that distinguish competition Maseratis. Style, elegance and safety, combined with extraordinary performance, makes driving the Maserati GranTurismo S a thrilling experience that can be enjoyed every day.

GranTurismo S is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 in place of the unit regular GT's 4.2-liter. Output of 433 horsepower at 7000 rpm with a torque rating of 360 lb-ft at 4750 rpm, repair 28, and 21 respectively. In S, an MC-Shift replace sophisticated dual-clutch six-speed ZF automatic transmission. The changes at the highest speed for the S 183 mph, up from 177 mph, and reached 62 mph from stop nearly three-tenths of seconds faster, at 4.93. Because the transaxle configuration, weight distribution over the rear S-bias, at 53 percent, compared with 51 percent of the ordinary car was rear bias.

New high power Brembo brakes increase stopping distance and offers a high resistance to fade. Maserati claims the car can stop from 62 mph in less than 115 meters. This system has a front brake discs made with dual-cast technology, so that pairs up iron and aluminum for a better weight, heat transfer properties, and extorted by a mono-block calipers aluminum 6-piston.

Compared with the standard GranTurismo, S rides on unique 20-inch wheels, up from 19-inch wheels. Other exterior visual differences between the two sides of skirts and unique integrated spoiler. The dimensions of the GranTurismo and S are nearly identical, although S is 2.7 inches wider.

In addition to the above changes, the S features of a conventional suspension set-up, aggressively tuned to reduce roll by 10 percent compared with the GranTurismo pedestrians. Electronically-adjustable Skyhook suspension was found in a weaker car is an option. Interior Poltrona Frau leather and Alcantara for luxury increased, and include more aggressive seat supported.

Engine

The Maserati GranTurismo S is powered by an eight cylinder, 4,691 cc V90° engine that develops 440 bhp at 7,000 rpm and produces a maximum torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm. The timing is actioned by two overhead camshafts per bank and four valves per cylinder controlled by hydraulic tappets. The overhead camshafts on the aspirated side are controlled by a low pressure, continual phase variator with an actuation time of less than 0.15 seconds.

The 4.7 litre V8’s maximum power is achieved at 7,500 rpm but can reach 7,600 rpm in dynamic conditions with on-the-limit gear changes. The power unit is one of Maserati’s new breed of wet sump engines.

Exhaust

The engines deep throaty sound can be fully appreciated thanks to the sports exhaust. However, the engine noise never interferes with the on-board comfort you would expect from a true grand tourer.

The set up features two steel exhaust pipes, one for each cylinder bank, that are compensated by a central silencer. Two pneumatic valves are set close to the rear silencers and are controlled electronically by the engine’s central computer. They can be managed by the driver by pushing the ‘Sport’ button on the central console. The new exhaust system is instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive tailpipes where the two outlets come together in an eye-catching single chrome oval.

Gearbox

From a technical point of view, the electro-actuated gearbox fitted to the Maserati GranTurismo S has a six-speed (plus reverse), twin disc clutch, with a triple cone synchroniser on the first and second gears and a double cone on the other gears.

The twin disc clutch derives from the world of competition and is particularly suitable for sports cars: the reduced size of the clutch group (215 mm), and the small diameter of the flywheel (240 mm), keeps the unit’s overall weight down. This notably reduces the engine’s inertia compared to a single disc set up. The system also allows top end revs to be reached more easily, resulting in a quicker response from the gears, faster shifts and improved gear dynamics.

The electro-actuated transmission can be used in two ways: manual and automatic. Manual mode is for those who prefer a sportier, more involving driving experience with gear changes only made if the driver requests them in order to fully unlock the car’s performance. Automatic mode is designed for when the driver wants a relaxing drive: the system decides not only when to change gear but at what revs.

MC-Shift

The MC-Shift gearbox is the biggest innovation on the electro-actuated system fitted to the Maserati GranTurismo S. MC-Shift is a management and components software that allows super fast gear change times.

On the Maserati GranTurismo S, the gear changes partially overlap and engaging and disengaging the gear happens before the clutch fully opens and shuts. This means that gear changes, taken as the time from when the foot comes off the accelerator, drops to 100ms, while the gear shift itself takes 40ms.

The fast MC-Shift is only available when changing up and in Manual Sport mode when the gearbox computer recognises that the parameters relative to the temperature of the engine and gearbox have been reached. The fast changes can be made above 5,500 revs and with the accelerator pedal at 80% opening. Once these parameters have been reached, the system enables fast changes and advises the driver of this via the MC-S light on the instrument panel.

Transaxle set up

The Maserati GranTurismo S is equipped with a transaxle system, part of Maserati’s proud technical tradition and that is found on many high performance sports cars. The transaxle set-up further improves the weight distribution of the GranTurismo by shifting the gearbox to the rear in a single block with the differential. The mid-mounted engine is firmly connected to the electro-actuated gearbox, set in the rear, via a rigid tube that houses the drive shaft. These solutions give the Maserati GranTurismo S a front-rear weight distribution of 47%-53%, unique in its segment.

Suspension

The Maserati GranTurismo S comes with fixed-setting suspension that is now fitted with new springs and dampers to offer 10% more damping. The compression and extension ratios have also been tweaked and adapted to the car’s specific characteristics and the rear torsion bar has been reinforced.

The Skyhook system

As an alternative to fixed rate dampers, the electronically controlled Skyhook suspension is available as an option. This system employs dampers with an aluminium body that continually adjust the damping.

The Skyhook system acts by using acceleration sensors that detect movement on all four wheels and the body. A control unit processes the data it receives from the sensors, analyses the driving style and road surface and instantly adjusts the dampers accordingly via their proportional valves. However, as the Skyhook and transmission data from the sensors is fed to the same point, Maserati engineers have integrated the two systems. As such, the GranTurismo S is able to fine tune the suspension settings so that the driver feels even less movement through the chassis during gear changes.

Opting for the ‘Sport’ setting results in a stiffer ride, less roll, more contained load transfer, greater agility and stability as well as allowing startling performance figures. The dedicated on board computer reduces gear shifts by 40% and Skyhook switches from controlling the ride to focusing on the set up (body control), making the GranTurismo easier to handle and giving it more grip. Together, the two systems combine to offer more precise and involving gear changes.

Maserati Grand Turismo S, Powerful And Aggressive

A year after the unveiling of the GranTurismo, Maserati will be back at the Geneva International Motorshow with yet another world premiere, the GranTurismo S. The ultimate expression of the Trident coupé's sportiness shifts the emphasis onto performance and driving enjoyment.

Two main novelties are at the heart of the new Maserati: the 440 HP V8 4.7 engine and the electro-actuated gearbox with fast MC-Shift arranged in the Transaxle layout typical of high-performance sports cars that represents the technological DNA of all Maseratis.

The GranTurismo S makes use of the high-performance brake system developed in collaboration with Brembo and introduced for the first time in the automotive field on the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S. The system features front brake discs made with dual-cast technology - a dual casting of cast iron and aluminum, paired with aluminum mono-bloc 6-piston brake calipers, ensuring optimized braking performance.

On the exterior the Maserati GranTurismo S is characterised by a number of aesthetic modifications that, although discrete, are highly effective and make the car body appear sportier without abandoning the sleekness of the lines masterfully designed by Pininfarina.

Seat features finished in Alcantara central zone and a new horizontal pipe. Along with Poltrona Frau ® leather-Alcantara combination, Alcantara can be substituted for the skin * peccary. Peccary comes in three natural shades and is a natural skin embossed different from that normally used in vehicle seats. Its natural look and no additional chemical treatment to distinguish from other skin.

GranTurismo S cocoon the driver and gave him the sensation of having everything under control. From the driver's seat you can experience a shift, gear elegant chrome-edged paddle behind the wheel. Center console has a home switch panel to select first gear and vice versa through the gearbox electro-pressed.

Maserati GranTurismo S personalization that results in a more contemporary look. You can even choose AluTex to the dashboard, door panels and rear side panels. AluTex is a material created by inserting fine aluminum powder on the surface of fiberglass, this produces an unusual brilliance and three-dimensional effect.

Toyota FT-HS Concept, Luxury Car Design

It’s not a Supra, but… When it debuted in 2007, is was suggested that the Toyota FT-HS (Future Toyota Hybrid Sport) might fill the void left by the iconic turbocharged sports coupe. Toyota, however, suggests that this is not the case, but rather that the FT-HS will create a new market segment for an “attainable exotic,” with prices slated to start around the mid-$30,000 range. The gorgeous 2+2’s high performance V6 is mated to the newest version of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive and hypothetically will produce around 400bhp, with a projected 0-60 time of around 4 seconds. Aesthetically, this car seems to borrow quite a bit from the Lexus LF-A, such as the elongated nose and angular body. The FT-HS will be revamped before the Tokyo Auto Show later this year, hopefully emerging shortly thereafter in 2010 as a production model.

The Cost Of Custom for Car Modifications – 2011 Ford Focus High Performance

Ford Focus With Custom Cars Modifications

Ford is redesigning its compact car with a renewed focus on “whole-earth” appeal–in more ways than one. International style, high-efficiency powertrains, and green-tech engineering should make it a strong competitor from Boston to Beijing. A full-electric version could prove popular too, especially if gas prices go through the roof again.
We’ll spare you the drama, the new Ford Focus sedan is very good indeed, but you’ve probably clued in to that already. The main question – and one that’s asks of many Ford products – is whether the Focus can replicate its success in Europe and take on the might of Toyota and Honda in Asia. Overcoming its modest brand image in the passenger car segment will be key. Remember the Laser/ Lynx? That was a good steer too, yet for all its generous cabin space, class-leading driving dynamics and decent quality, there were few takers. So this time round, Ford isn’t mucking about with rebadged Mazdas, only the most successful passenger car in Blue Oval’s recent history would suffice, a true global Ford car that has sold over five million units around the world.

In return, we won’t muck around with what we think on the looks either. When the new five-door hatchback Focus was unveiled in Europe late last year, we were lukewarm about its appearance. Ford took the safe route, eschewing the previous generation’s cutting-edge design. So indistinct are the aesthetics (of the European model) that this writer strolled past the saloon’s debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show without realizing that it would be the car tasked with reviving Ford’s fortunes in passenger saloons. We were worried.

Fast forward to last month’s media preview in Thailand and let’s just say the Ford Focus view Dashboard interiors

sigh of relief was all too palpable when the curtains were drawn. It’s telling how minor aesthetic tweaks can significantly alter the appeal of a car. No, the Focus still isn’t gorgeous, but with the Asia-specific clear lens tail-lamps and chromed grille, it is much more palatable, attractive almost. If you have already gotten the cheque book out, then the optional body-kit (as seen on our test car) is a must have, it adorns the Focus with much-needed presence. Ford officials did point out that while the previous generation focus captured the imagination of many, its controversial styling divided opinions, it would seem the risk of alienating the masses was just too big a gamble.

The mission to capture a wider audience (read the Corolla and Civic crowd) also warranted a more ‘mature’ interior design. The judicious application of ‘wood’ of a subtle shade, two-tone colour scheme mid smattering of brushed aluminum accents on the Focus cabin is right on I lie money and tastefully executed. The quality is generally good as well, though some plastics aren’t quite Japanese slick (such as the air-con vent flaps and switchgear), but the four-spoke leather steering is good to grip, while the main controls are laid out logically and easy to master. The amenities and equipment list is also generous and thoroughly contemporary, courtesy of the ‘Ghia’ specs. There’s a useful trip computer, a CD player that stacks six, accompanied by satellite controls on the steering column, a dual-zone automatic climate control system with rear air-con vents, clever little cubby holes front and back, a rear bench that folds flat.

Have you ever gotten into a new car and felt immediately at ease by how it drives? We reckon the Focus will do that to you. Apart from the seats that should be more supportive, the relation of the primary driving controls – steering, brakes and throttle – is spot-on, the sensation isn’t dissimilar to say getting into a BMW 3-Series and attaining the confidence to nail all the corner apexes on your way home. The steering might have surrendered some purity and feedback of the original rack in the transition to electric-hydraulic power, but it is no less accurate, and weighs up nicely as the speed increases.

Like its forebear, the new Focus offers a blend of ride comfort and sporty handling contemporaries will find hard to match. It is often debated whether these qualities might be wasted on the average owner who will only deploy the Focus on daily commute to work or the supermarket, which is likely the case, but anyone in the Focus can appreciate the supple (but not soft) ride, the responsive steering, the high resistance to under steer and roll, and the control and ease of modulation when braking. All of which makes the Focus an exceptionally easy drive, and an even more rewarding one for keener drivers.

Ford Focus view engine spec

The flipside to good handling is that it exposes power deficiencies more readily, and while the 130bhp/ 165Nm 1.8-litre Duratec four-cylinder performs adequately in town, on open roads, you’ll be wishing for some extra grunt. An additional forward ratio wouldn’t have gone amiss either, but the four-speed auto is thankfully well-paired with the engine characteristics, and both go about their tasks in a refined, Toyota-like manner. You can dictate matters with the sequential ‘manual’ shift, of which we discovered that the top speed of 190km/h of the Focus is best achieved by leaving it in third.

If the second coming of the Focus is more grounded with a sales pitch targeted at ‘regular’ car buyers (the sportier 2.0-litre five-door hatchback will follow in a month’s time), then it is wholly intended. The new Focus sedan is here for the long haul, styled and tuned for Asia, produced in Philippines, with the lofty objective of giving the Japanese a run for their money. We think it is good enough even if it means being a little less flamboyant.

What We Know About the 2011 Ford Focus
We know it’s a bit early to be talking about the 2011 (or will it be 2012?) Ford Focus. But we also know that a full redesign of this compact car is already underway, and we can make some educated inferences about it based on recent announcements by Ford executives, competitors’ likely moves, and general industry trends.

All Ford Focus Prices & Reviews
For starters, the 2011 Ford Focus will be a true “world car,” sold around the globe with only relatively modest tailoring for local needs and tastes. The debut year-2000 Focus was a “world car” too. But where Europe and other overseas markets got a redesigned replacement in 2005, Ford kept the original “C1” design for North America as a cost-saving move. Though that seemed prudent at the time, it meant the model was bound to fall behind key competitors. Sure enough, most of them have been redesigned twice since the millennium turned, so the North American Focus now seems dated despite a 2005-model freshening and an even more-extensive redo for ’08.

Under the “One Ford” product strategy ordained by CEO Alan Mullaly, the next-generation Focus is being designed and engineered by Ford Europe, the company’s designated center for global small-car development. The aim is to trim upfront costs and boost manufacturing economies of scale with a single basic design that can be built and sold anywhere, rather than having disparate regional variations. That’s been the appeal of every world-car project since Ford’s own Model T, though only the original Volkswagen Beetle (and maybe the Toyota Corolla) has had similar global success.

Unlike today’s North American Focus, most of its overseas cousins use Ford’s newer C2 platform. So do the Mazda 3 and Volvo’s C30/S40/V50 compact cars. The replacement C3 architecture would presumably serve future versions of those models as well as the 2011 Ford Focus, but should be even more “scalable” to suit a wider range of vehicle types. That includes crossover SUVs and stylish compact people movers like Ford Europe’s popular Focus-based S-Max.

2011 Ford Focus Features
We expect the 2011 Ford Focus to be roomier than today’s car, as the C3 platform is likely to bring modest gains in width, height, and wheelbase. Overall length, however, will probably be unchanged or even slightly reduced. Because weight is the enemy of performance, fuel economy, and a car’s carbon footprint, we also see Ford paring pounds through greater use of aluminum, plastics, high-strength steel, and other lightweight materials–costly substitutions for this price class, but necessary in light of tough new U.S. fuel-economy standards and equally daunting Euro-zone caps on CO2 emissions.

Toward the same end, the 2011 Ford Focus should benefit from new high-efficiency front-wheel-drive powertrains that Dearborn is said to be working on. These involve a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and engines designed to do more with less. Dubbed PowerShift, Ford’s new dual-clutch gearbox behaves much the same as a conventional automatic transmission. But the company says the dual-clutch transmission weighs less than a 4-speed auto, and helps increase fuel economy by about nine percent.

The U.S.-market Focus will get a clean-sheet 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. Other gas-fueled engines are possible as well, and we also see the possibility of a “clean-diesel” counterpart and maybe even a 4-cylinder turbodiesel. The European Focus already offers thrifty “DuraTorq” diesel fours, but the upcoming engines would be even cleaner and thus 50-state legal. Nevertheless, a diesel-powered 2011 Ford Focus could well boast EPA-rated fuel economy of 40 mpg city and 50 highway–as indeed it will need to with the way fuel prices are going.

2011 Ford Focus Additional Features
We haven’t heard any official word on a gas-electric hybrid version of the Focus, but Ford has confirmed that a full-electric version will go on sale in North America during 2011. A so-called Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV), the all-electric Focus is being developed in partnership with auto supplier Magna International and will be built in Michigan. Details are still sketchy, but Ford is suggesting a possible 100-mile range using a lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged through a 110-volt or 220-volt outlet.

As for styling, company designers are said to be collaborating on a new global Ford-brand look that reconciles Europe’s current “kinetic” motif with the “Bold American” theme exemplified by the Fusion midsize car and Edge crossover SUV. Based on the pre-production models Ford has shown, the 2011 Ford Focus will look something like a cross between the current Taurus and Fiesta with a smooth lozenge shape punctuated by crisp sheetmetal creases and a big trapezoidal grille. An optional “Titanium” trim level adds sporty interior trim that is a bold combination of leather and technical fabrics. It is a classy, complex look that reminds some of Puma or Nike athletic shoes or clothing and could help the new Focus stand out in a crowded market.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Ford Focus
A good many Americans could be downsizing their rides in the coming years, but they won’t want to sacrifice safety or convenience features for higher mpg and lower emissions. Ford is well aware of this from decades of doing business in Europe, where feature-laden, tech-filled compact cars are strong sellers. We thus expect the 2011 Ford Focus to have more standard equipment and a longer option list than today’s U.S. models. It will still be a competitively priced mainstream compact, but luxury features should proliferate to ease any buyer pain associated with going small. For example, Ford’s new My Ford Touch control system and an improved version of the popular Sync system will certainly be available on the next-generation Focus.

2011 Ford Focus Buying Advice
There’s little advice we can give this far out, other than repeating the old common sense mantra about scouting the field before you buy. The 2011 Ford Focus could be a new class trendsetter, much as the original was back in 2000. But you know competitive brands won’t be sitting on their hands, so Ford’s redesign will have to be very good just to be a contender.

2011 Ford Focus Release Date
Ford recently announced that 4- and 5-door versions of the new European Focus will start North American production in late 2010. So the 2011 Ford Focus should be out of the gate by spring of 2011.

2011 Ford Focus First Test Drive
Again, assuming all goes well–including model-year 2011 timing–media previews could be set for the fourth quarter of 2010.

2011 Ford Focus Prices
Inflation keeps making everything more expensive, so a Focus will certainly cost more in the next decade than it does now. How much more? That’s tough to predict so far in advance, but we’d guess prices will start around $17,000, about $3,000 above today’s minimum, and range into the mid-$20,000s with a hefty option load. The BEV version will probably cost even more than a loaded gas-powered Focus. If that sounds like a lot for a small Ford, keep in mind that the Focus arrived eight years ago starting just under $12,000.

Want to by a car that runs on water? Well, this might have sounded funny a few years back, but not anymore. To beat the growing menace of air pollution, scientists have really developed cars that use 100% water as fuel. And what’s more, these cars might possibly be the vehicles of the future, in a time when gasoline and diesel powered cars will be rendered obsolete and relegated to museums.

Cars running on alternate sources of energy are the latest fad in the automobile world. In fact, scientists have developed cars that run not only on water but also on other non-conventional sources of energy such as electricity, solar power, bio-diesel, ethanol and LPG. This is a necessity, considering the depleting stocks of fossil fuels and the rising pollution levels in the world. In this article, we take a quick look at the various pros and cons of cars powered by alternate energy sources.

Honda insight

Till date, the most popular form of alternate energy that has been used to power cars is electricity. Cars like Toyota Prius and Honda Insight can operate using both electricity and gasoline. These cars, labelled as hybrids, contain an electric motor in addition to the regular one, giving the rider a choice of power source. Compared to other cars, the hybrids are more environment friendly, and are also cheap to run. Hybrid electric vehicles contain batteries which may be charged using a standard electrical plug at home.

The use of LPG and CNG has also been promoted by various governments in the recent years to cut down on the emission of greenhouse gases. Cars powered by CNG are extremely fuel-efficient, and produce very low levels of emission. It is possible to convert a conventional petrol engine in a CNG compatible one by using a simple Hybrid Conversion Kit, thus giving petrol car owners a chance to cut down on emission levels.

Besides these, a lot of research has been done in the recent years in developing cars that run on solar power and bio-diesel. While the former typically harvests energy from the sun using solar panels on its body, the latter uses fuels derived from natural, renewable sources of energy such as plants and vegetable oils. Astrolab, designed by the French transportation futurists Venturi, is the world’s first commercially available solar-powered car. Solar powered cars have zero-emission levels and are ideal carriers for a pollution-free world. However, the development of the solar car is still in its nascent stages and we are yet to have a solar-powered heavy vehicle on the roads. On the other hand, cars running on bio-fuel are easier to make, but their popularity has been checked due to the limited availability of bio-fuels.

The water powered car is also one of the possible solutions that scientists have come up to meet the challenges of growing air-pollution. This car uses the technique of electrolysis to split water into Oxygen and Hydrogen, thus generating the required power in the process. Although a totally pollution-free vehicle, the water-powered car is expensive to make, and research is still on to make the car commercially viable.

What is promising however, is the tremendous amount of interest that hybrid cars have generated among people all over the world. With depleting oil stocks and rising fuel prices, vigorous R&D is being conducted in developing automobiles that run on alternate forms of energy. The increase in air-pollution and the Greenhouse effect has also contributed to the search for a non-polluting, cost-effective car. In fact, we are not very far away from the day when the perfect green car will be a reality for consumers. Hybrid cars are indeed the vehicles of tomorrow and they are here to stay.

New Styling Dashboard Car Modifications Tips

New Styling Dashboard Car Modifications Tips

Now a days interior modification of the car has really grabbed the attention of the car enthusiasts and they are showing up with different innovations almost every day. The reason is simple. More innovations in the car’s interior materials. Car interior is a wide terminology but I will, for the sake of simplicity, stick myself to the car dashboard.

Obviously the first thing of the car interior which comes into notice is the dashboard bearing lots of panels and slots and if job well done, one can really impress his mate by the help of some cool dashboard styling tips. Luckily for the car modifiers, the automotive industry has moved far from that same old fashioned, boring standard plastic. Many types of material like leather, carbon fiber, fur e.t.c are available for dashboard styling. So giving your dashboard a new look is no more difficult. Only your creativity is the limit.

I will be discussing some cool car dashboard styling tips which will be proved helpful in gaining you an extra edge among your peers. First of all complimenting your overall car theme is extremely important. Even the brand reputation of your car is important. For instance if you own a luxury car, motor sport style interior will not be suitable for your car and vice versa, of course!

Modifying or adding new gauges in your dashboard is really helpful. Wide variety of gauges and different meters are available. Even you don’t have to integrate different gauges one by one as the whole complete set of digital dashboards are available making this modification job even more easy. Gauges are helpful in monitoring oil pressure, voltages, temperature e.t.c but don’t get carried away with them and start unnecessarily adding them into your dashboard or you will end up in giving your car a “spaceship look”.

Informations Audio System Cars..

Choosing the best car audio system that works for your car and your style can be difficult. You will need to plan ahead before you buy because you don’t want to spend a single dollar on trials and errors. Start by visualizing the look that you want and try to research about the audio output and audio quality that you may want for your car. To help you further, here are some tips on how to choose the best car audio system.

Check your in-dash receiver. Always see how much space you have and what dimensions should your car stereo system should be. Buying a system that is too big can cause a big headache on your part while buying a car audio system that is too small will cause as much trouble as the latter. Always take measurements and ask about the best audio kit for your car type.

After adding gauges divert your attention towards the steering wheel. New sporty small diameter steering wheel will enhance your sporty looks provided if you are willing to give a sporty look or different varieties are available. The choice is yours. Drilled aluminum pedals are in now a days for accelerators and brakes however even more varieties are available with wider foot prints. Complement the gear knob with dashboard and gauges. Remember being haphazard will ruin your hard work. Always stay consistent to one decided theme.

When modifying the gauges, the standard, factory fitted gauges can be removed by removing the instrument panel. However few cars would require complete disintegration of the dashboard to install these gauges. In most cases the companies provide with the new gauges, complete kits to replace the old one. White backgrounds are preferred in most cases as they are popular and when the dashboard illumination goes on at the night it helps in glowing, the numbers of the gauges and amazingly itself goes darker giving a really clear look to your gauges to the outsiders and as a whole real cool look to the dashboard.
